Job Summary 

The Litigation Paralegal investigates facts and prepares pleadings, discovery, and other documents in order to provide substantive legal support and case management to a group of attorneys who perform work in the areas of complex business litigation, oil and gas/energy litigation, general litigation, privacy and data security, and financial services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understands and takes ownership of assigned cases, matters, and projects, and is responsible for client contact and case management
  • Prepares, organizes, screens and reviews all case, matter, and project documents and materials
  • Identifies, analyzes, and synthesizes information to move cases, matters, and projects forward; assesses underlying issues and implications; and highlights potential issues for the attorneys
  • Drafts discovery to opposing party and responses to discovery in federal and state court
  • Drafts basic pleadings in federal and state court
  • Works directly with clients regarding discovery matters
  • Contacts other court, office, and agency personnel as required to obtain information needed for case, matter, and project work
  • Communicates with and interviews clients and third-party witnesses as directed by the attorneys
  • Coordinates discovery and witnesses for court and agency proceedings
  • Performs factual and legal research, prepares correspondence, and drafts various pleadings, petitions, affidavits, subpoenas, briefs, agreements, responses, motions, orders, and other legal documents
  • Familiar with rules of civil procedure in federal and state court
  • Assists attorneys in identifying and developing process improvements

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Training from a paralegal program or paralegal certification preferred
  • 5 years litigation paralegal experience, including (1) federal and state court experience, (2) experience with bankruptcy courts, (3) ability to work directly with clients and establish, build, and maintain client relationships, (4) case management and ownership responsibilities, and (5) experience drafting a wide breadth and depth of legal documents
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat
  • Familiar with systems, processes, and applications used in the legal environment, including enterprise time and billing (Elite), ProDoc, Pacer, Texas E-filing systems, and DMS (iManage) systems/applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional prioritization, problem-solving, organizational and project management skills
  • Able to work well in a dynamic environment, and to respond effectively with calm, resourcefulness, and flexibility in demanding situations
